Grade Calculator

Add each grading category from your syllabus with its weight and your score. Your class grade and letter update as you type.

Grading categories

Scores can be percents (88) or points (44/50). Leave a score blank if that category isn't graded yet.

Grade Calculator by Scholarly, the scholarship app

Know your grades? See what they qualify you for.

Scholarly matches your grades, GPA and background to thousands of scholarships and shows only the ones you can win. Then it drafts each application for you to review.

How the grade calculator works

Most syllabi split your grade into categories, each with a weight. Homework might be 20% and tests 40%. Your class grade is each category score multiplied by its weight, added up, then divided by the total weight of the categories you have scores for.

grade = Σ(weight × score) ÷ Σ(weight of graded categories)

Weights that don't add to 100. If a category has no score yet, the calculator leaves its weight out, so you see your grade on the work graded so far. If your weights add up to something other than 100 (say 110, or 1, 2 and 3 as relative weights), the division still puts the result on a 100-point scale.

Points. Type a score like 44/50 and the calculator turns it into 88%. Extra credit can push a score above 100.

Letter grade scale used

LetterPercentLetterPercent
A+97 to 100C+77 to 79
A93 to 96C73 to 76
A-90 to 92C-70 to 72
B+87 to 89D+67 to 69
B83 to 86D63 to 66
B-80 to 82D- / F60 to 62 / below 60

A common plus and minus scale. Your syllabus sets the real cutoffs, and some classes don't use plus or minus at all. See the GPA to percentage converter for how these map to grade points.

Worked example

Homework is 20% (you have 95), quizzes 20% (88), tests 40% (84), and the final 20% (not taken yet).

Weighted points: 20 × 95 + 20 × 88 + 40 × 84 = 1,900 + 1,760 + 3,360 = 7,020.

Graded weight: 20 + 20 + 40 = 80. Grade so far: 7,020 ÷ 80 = 87.75%, a B+.

Score 90 on the final and it becomes (7,020 + 1,800) ÷ 100 = 88.2%.

Common questions

What if my category weights don't add up to 100%?

The calculator divides by the total weight you entered, so the result is still out of 100. If they add to less than 100 because a category isn't graded yet, leave that score blank and you'll see your grade on the work done so far.

How do I find my category weights?

Check the syllabus or your school's online gradebook. Look for a breakdown like "Homework 20%, Tests 40%". If there's no breakdown and every assignment is worth points, your grade is just total points earned divided by total points possible.

Can I enter points instead of a percent?

Yes. Type the score as points earned over points possible, like 44/50. For a whole category, add up every assignment first, like 182/200.

How do I figure out what I need on the final?

Enter the final as a category with its weight and try different scores to see your class grade change. Or use the final grade calculator, which works out the exact score you need.

Is my letter grade the same as my school's?

Only if your school uses the same cutoffs. This page uses a common plus and minus scale where 90 to 92 is an A- and 93 and up is an A. Many schools use a plain 90/80/70/60 scale instead. Your syllabus is the final word.
